3.1 Phillip Lim launched in New York in 2005, co-founded by Phillip Lim and Wen Zhou on a proposition that has largely defined its reputation: clothes that met how people actually lived, then elevated the result through cut, fabric, and restraint. Vogue called the early collections “pretty-but-cool,” a description that stuck.
Lim brought that same clarity to menswear when it became a key part of the brand’s identity in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Tailoring came softened, shirting carried a subtle athletic influence, and outerwear did much of the work. The clothes occupied a specific cultural space in New York menswear, post-Helmut Lang minimalism pushed through a more approachable, contemporary lens, aligned with what Band of Outsiders and early Theory were doing at their peak. Lim earned the CFDA Swarovski Award for Menswear in 2012.
Over time, womenswear and accessories became the primary drivers, and menswear stepped back from the runway and eventually from the brand’s output entirely. Lim stepped down as creative director in 2024, closing a chapter that once defined a certain strain of American menswear, one grounded in clean proportion and everyday practicality.
