Maharishi Fall 2008

I’m a sucker for plaid and Maharishi delivers for the fall season.  Inspired by “the concept of modern day hunter gatherers, fusing centuries-old hunting, camouflage and concealment techniques with modern day tailoring and fabric technologies”, the fall collection offers up a plethora of notable pieces.  Take note of the colorway on the flannel shirt above and the excellent cut of the plaid coat featured after the cut.

The plaid and flannel trend is something I’m really intrigued by, but as of late (despite my own collection of plaid pieces), I can’t help be bewildered by the sad sad misuse of it all. I’m seeing lots of lumberjacks and Nirvana-esque looks when I should be looking at fresh takes on the trend. Please Jesus, show them the way.

But aside from my mini-rant, I’m not sure if I’m as enthused about this collection as you are. I can’t put my finger on it, on what I’m put off by…but I’m not thrilled.

My view on collections is usually skewed by an immediate breakdown of the line into pieces that would work well with other lines. I would love to mix this collection with Band of Outsiders and Phillip Lim. I like mixing different style aesthetics.

I’m not sure if plaid and flannel can evolve. I don’t see it comparing to a blazer where you can switch up the lapel sizes and/or number of buttons, change the cut, etc. I see it more as an alternative color if that makes any sense. It’s in the same boat as checks, gingham, etc.

I understand what you’re saying. In that perspective of mixing the pieces with other styles and cuts etc. this would definitely be tasteful.
