Coming into his own, Richard Chai’s spring collection constructs a picture of sophistication and casualness. The collection has a subtle urban vibe, but is decisively more chic than Chai’s previous collection. The change of mood is directed by suiting, which has a strong presence, while at the same time conveying a laid-back atmosphere. When blazers are not layered with cardigans, they are the integral part of a silhouette that begins strong and narrow, before opening up into a billowing pair of trousers. Moving away from suiting, the collection maintains a consistency in relevance and style. Based in hues of gray, smart layering of prints and sheer fabrics offer a fresh take on spring. Altogether, Richard Chai does a beautiful job of painting a picture of a man who is able to ease seamlessly in between roles of grandeur and simplicity.
