With a taste of privilege and careless abandon, Band of Outsiders designer Scott Sternberg turned to the outdoors to set the stage for fall’s collection. Fusing his signature preppy style with the grit of a man who works outdoors, whether it is fishing or hunting, the new range embraced quilting and function in full force. Accenting a primary array of navy and gray with mustard yellow, suiting and outerwear fell into a casual stride as Sternberg remained true to the authentic Band of Outsiders man.
Band of Outsiders enlists actors Dave Franco, Donald Glover and Leslie Mann for this season’s lookbook. Venturing to Marina Del Rey for a day of fun captured in Polaroids, the trio bring a genuine humor to the preppy range, which was inspired by the Jacques Cousteau documentary Le Monde du Silence.
Band of Outsiders joins Marni in opening a mini-store on The Corner. The most recent collection from the label was inspired by Godard’s 1967 film La Chinoise. The film centers around a group of “young, rich French students who spent a summer in one of their parents’ Parisian apartments studying Mao and flirting with anarchy and rebellion.” The result is a collegiate collection of youth-obsessed separates dressed in the colors of autumn. Band of Outsiders designer Scott Sternberg cited Jacques Cousteau documentary Le Monde du Silence and Malibu in the seventies as inspiration for his spring collection. It’s great to have inspirations, but there is a disconnect when it comes to channeling that energy into making something useful, new and improved–better. By now, the Band of Outsiders formula has become apparent. Each season, Sternberg brings out well-tailored suiting, boat shoes and all the elements for the American prep scene. There is nothing wrong with that, but with no evolution, it’s stagnant and one note. Everything that needs to be said has been said. One can only hope that Band of Outsiders becomes one of those labels to experience that perfect curve ball that brings with it unexpectedness and a collection that is beyond refreshing.
Shot on Chung King Road earlier this week in Los Angeles, California, actor Jason Schwartzman took the latest Band of Outsiders collection for a spin. For those of you familiar with Schwartzman’s band Coconut Records, this guest appearance has added charm, seeing that he is an avid fan of Polaroids, often giving them to his own fans.
