Week in Review: Over-plaid?

Written by Nate on Sunday, July 19th, 2009 | 2009, C'N'C' CoSTUME NATIONAL, Comme des Garçons, fall 2009, house of the very island, kiryuyrik, sopopular, spring 2010, tiger of sweden

Despite Milan and Paris setting the scene for a spate of forthcoming Spring 2010 collections, we became acquainted this past week with a varied array of releases available for Fall 2009. While some hit the mark more than others, the collections all seemed to be participating in a parade of plaid. The plaid, or tartan, pattern was all the rage last fall season, seen in almost every runway show – BryanBoy agreed – and we again just couldn’t escape it earlier this year in Milan. The latest Fall 2009 releases from such labels as the palindromic Kiryuyrik and Junya Watanabe’s self-titled eYe collection with Comme des Garçons continue the trend… is it time to acknowledge that plaid might be just a little overplayed?

Kiryuyrik Fall 2009

Designer Masakatsu Takayanagi – a former pattern maker at Yohji Yamamoto – seems to have made a game of incorporating almost every current movement in fashion in his latest release under Kiryuyrik. There are sheen fabrics, tassels and bondage-inspired strappings, leather boots, a touch of androgyny in the form of kilts and fur… It comes, then, as no surprise that, having seen plaid aplenty during the fall 2009 collections showcased earlier this year, Takayanagi is more than happy to hedge his bets and embrace the tartan trend.

House Of The Very Island Spring 2010

Written by Carl on Tuesday, July 14th, 2009 | 2009, 2010, Runway, house of the very island, spring, spring 2010

Life is too short to be so serious all the time and fashion often provides the perfect outlet for carefree fun. House of the Very Island is the perfect example of this expression. Taking to eco-friendly jerseys, linen and various cotton blends, designers Marcus Hausleitner and Karin Krapfenbauer create an eclectic collection of brightly colored mix and match pieces. From ballooned pant legs to patched blazers and tops, the jovial collection excels in delivering enticing proportions evocative of the past and present.

House Of The Very Island Fall 2009

Written by Carl on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009 | 2009, fall, fall 2009, house of the very island, lookbooks/presentations

Fall 2009 Collection

As evidenced by their fall collection, House of the Very Island is all about taking a basic piece, deconstructing it, and then reconstructing it with new features and form. In this same essence, the latest collection embraces duality, often taking one piece and reworking it to create a second one.

About The Label…In Their Own Words

The label “house of the very island’s royal club division middlesex klassenkampf, but the question is: where are u, now?” is a cooperation of four individual designers rooted in a network of underground artists, musicians and film-makers in Vienna. A therefore widely influenced notion of clothing is at the heart of our work, that lays it’s formal accents on the bricolage, the deconstruction and reconstruction of given dress codes. Combining our individual emphasizes, every collection forms a conceptual unity including a short film presented along with it.

Each of us having a specific approach, we nevertheless share basic ideas and believes like the concern with ecological sustainability, with the social and political discourses surrounding us and the profound need to get rid of the stereotypes created by these discourses. The cultural construction of reality and identity, especially the issue of gender and it’s performance is crucial to all our approaches towards a fashion statement. Created through ironic distortions and citational shifts, our clothes are meant to suit all genders and give way to individual expressions.
The question marking the end of the label’s name should be read as a constant appeal, adressed to ourselves and adressing those around us, reminding of the continous challenge, the need to position and re-position ourselves within the margins of fashion and outside of it.
