The Elegance of Being | Erik Hassle by Ellis Scott for Notion Magazine

Written by Carl on Wednesday, March 17th, 2010 | 2010, editorial, martyn bal

Months back, designer Martyn Bal and musician Erik Hassle came together for the spring 2010 campaign season and now Notion’s current issue reunites the duo for a modest editorial photographed by Ellis Scott. Acting as stylist, Bal outfits Hassle in this season’s range, making sure to incorporate the songwriter’s own clothes as well. Summing up the experience as straightforward, the Bal man is about garments that are at peace in any wardrobe.

Martyn Bal Spring 2010 Campaign | Erik Hassle by Richard Stow

Written by Carl on Friday, February 5th, 2010 | 2010, Campaigns, martyn bal, spring, spring 2010

Martyn Bal looks to singer and songwriter Erik Hassle for his latest muse. Recognizing Hassle as “the steely, tattooed veneer of an east London boy, but underneath, as you’ll hear on record…an emotional soul”, Bal took note of a beautiful duality that he wanted to capture in his spring collection. Infusing sharp masculine elements with soft, free flowing elements, Bal creates a certain element of romanticism with his collection, blending a rebellious nature with a penchant for classic tailoring. Looking to photographer Richard Stow, Hassle was captured wearing the spring range at Knebworth House, a place known for epic live performances from the likes of The Rolling Stones.

Exclusive First Look – Martyn Bal Fall 2009

Written by Carl on Wednesday, April 1st, 2009 | 2009, fall, fall 2009, jacob coupe, lookbooks/presentations, martyn bal

Designer Martyn Bal approaches the fall 2009 season with a sophistication that redefines tradition. The collection’s strength rest in its outerwear. A monochromatic color palette enhances the fine details of construction. Sculpted with tender care and an appreciation for the male form, the tailoring is impeccable and the silhouettes picturesque. Carefully fitted, when the collection is not slender in proportion, an oversize element adds just the right amount of volume. Quite fitting of the upcoming fall season, the collection’s elements work together to bring out the quiet, refined confidence of the Martyn Bal man.

Martyn Bal Spring 2009

Written by Carl on Thursday, December 18th, 2008 | 2009, Spring 2009, lookbooks/presentations, martyn bal, spring

Designer Martyn Bal has impressive work experience.  His past includes being an apprentice to Dirk Bikkembergs, assistant to Hedi Slimane at Dior Homme, designer for Versace, and director at Burberry Prorsum. “From exquisite tailoring, perfectly constructed outerwear and an equally intuitive and studied approach to fashion, MARTYN BAL exudes a profound sense of energy intimately connected to music, contemporary art and gender theories. MARTYN BAL aims to challenge fashion conventions with an architectural vision, around shapes, fit and proportion, while effortlessly juxtaposing strength and fragility, forcefulness and elegance, with hedonism and romanticism.” [Martyn Bal]
