It came as a shock earlier this year, when news broke that fall 2009 would be Number (N)ine’s last season. Fittingly entitled “A Closed Feeling”, the last collection was somber, yet continued in designer Takahiro Miyashita’s more dramatic direction. Here, we revisit this progression by taking one last brief look at Number (N)ine’s latter collections.

It is the end of the line for Takahiro Miyashita’s label, Number (N)ine. The fall 2009 collection appropriately titled, “A Closed Feeling” will be the last collection. On Saturday, Hint reported:
“Today we received a letter (an actual letter, so you know it’s serious) from Number (N)ine. It started with this quote: “When you’re finished changing, you’re finished.” You guessed it: the Tokyo-based, Paris-showing men’s label launched 12 years ago by Takahiro Miyashita is closing. The fall ‘09 collection—portentously called A Closed Feeling—was the last. The letter went on to say “Over the last decade, Number (N)ine evolved, always forging ahead with a unique and potent vision, to emerge as one of the leading brands of Japan.” We agree with the sentiment. Number (N)ine will be (m)issed.”
Hopefully, on the horizon will be a new Miyashita project.

Last season, Takahiro Miyashita stunned the fashion world with a sugary-sweet collection inspired by musician Brian Jones. Notably, the pieces featured, broke away from Number (N)ine’s typical dark aesthetic, instead embracing a color palette very dependent on white. Overall, the clothes were frilly and hinted at the days of American colonialism. In a natural progression, Miyashita has taken to this look once again, but thankfully returned to his dark roots. The prissy Number (N)ine man of last season has fallen on hard times and has to rely on the dark, drab materials that surround him.
