Year in Review | Number (N)ine Comes to an End

Written by Carl on Thursday, December 17th, 2009 | 2009, number (n)ine, year in review 2009

It came as a shock earlier this year, when news broke that fall 2009 would be Number (N)ine’s last season. Fittingly entitled “A Closed Feeling”, the last collection was somber, yet continued in designer Takahiro Miyashita’s more dramatic direction. Here, we revisit this progression by taking one last brief look at Number (N)ine’s latter collections.

  • It’s absolutely devastating that this fall will see Number (N)ine’s last collection. The official website has even been taken down. Regardless, Number (N)ine celebrates the end with their “Last Songs” collection. (Hypebeast)
  • The relationship between fashion and celebrities can be quite the nuisance. If we have to deal with it, it would be nice if stylists could remain on point. Check out US Weekly’s latest shoot featuring Robert Pattinson…ouch!
  • Style Salvage covers E Tautz’s Englishman on holiday.
  • Come this October, Conde Nast will be closing Men.Style in favor of spotlighting GQ.com and Details.com. Nice move, but shouldn’t they be combining GQ and Details? (Advertising Age)
  • Apparently, Our Legacy snuck out their autumn lookbook. Hmmmm…regardless, it’s the same old same on that front. Trousers. Check. Knits. Check. You get the idea.
  • Enjoyed yesterday’s Karl Lagerfeld post? So did the fake Karl–he wrote an ode to his motorbike. Oh Motorbike, The feel of the wind sweeping through my hair on a cold Parisian night with Lara behind, And the swept streets and the mute lights and the storming gravel,…
  • Is that you Ash…with your hmmm…in a shoe? Say, it is not so.

“A Closed Feeling” Number (N)ine’s Last Collection

Written by Carl on Sunday, February 22nd, 2009 | 2009, News, number (n)ine

It is the end of the line for Takahiro Miyashita’s label, Number (N)ine. The fall 2009 collection appropriately titled, “A Closed Feeling” will be the last collection.  On Saturday, Hint reported:

“Today we received a letter (an actual letter, so you know it’s serious) from Number (N)ine. It started with this quote: “When you’re finished changing, you’re finished.” You guessed it: the Tokyo-based, Paris-showing men’s label launched 12 years ago by Takahiro Miyashita is closing. The fall ‘09 collection—portentously called A Closed Feeling—was the last. The letter went on to say “Over the last decade, Number (N)ine evolved, always forging ahead with a unique and potent vision, to emerge as one of the leading brands of Japan.” We agree with the sentiment. Number (N)ine will be (m)issed.”

Hopefully, on the horizon will be a new Miyashita project.

The Return of Darkness – Number (N)ine Fall 2009

Written by Carl on Thursday, January 22nd, 2009 | 2009, Runway, fall, fall 2009, number (n)ine

Last season, Takahiro Miyashita stunned the fashion world with a sugary-sweet collection inspired by musician Brian Jones. Notably, the pieces featured, broke away from Number (N)ine’s typical dark aesthetic, instead embracing a color palette very dependent on white. Overall, the clothes were frilly and hinted at the days of American colonialism. In a natural progression, Miyashita has taken to this look once again, but thankfully returned to his dark roots. The prissy Number (N)ine man of last season has fallen on hard times and has to rely on the dark, drab materials that surround him.
