London Fashion Week | Soar Fall 2010

Written by Carl on Wednesday, February 24th, 2010 | 2010, Runway, fall, fall 2010, london fashion week, soar

Disrupting the classics with a sudden shift in shape and proportion, Tim Soar approaches the fall season with creative tension. At a glance, the collection appears formal, but strangely enough, the decision to omit traditional shirt collars in favor of the crew-neck paves the way for an understated casualness. Meanwhile, cropped boxy silhouettes make layering inevitable, while longer finishes break with the image of the tidy suit. At odds with itself, the collection can go any direction, but in the context of Soar’s work, fall’s offerings most definitely tip in favor of the formal.

Spring 2010 | Soar

Written by Carl on Thursday, September 24th, 2009 | 2009, 2010, Runway, cole mohr, george barnett, johannes linder, lasse pedersen, london fashion week, robbie wadge, soar, spring, spring 2010

We previously shared a preview of Tim Soar’s spring 2010 collection last month and yesterday the British designer revealed the complete collection as part of London Fashion Week. Entitled, “Folding Diagrams for a Spread Squash”, the initial preview of the collection showed off Soar’s minimal vision taking menswear to a silhouette that is very boxy with modest colors for the most part. However, the runway show reveals the collection in a new light. Soar’s regular DJ gigs heavily influenced the collection lending it to a younger feel. Soar’s DJ inspirations influence the collection in a decisive manner, infusing his suiting with metallic silver, reptile prints and leather. On point with spring’s trends, Soar’s collection also features semi-sheer white pieces. At large, Soar travels a road that is impractical with his selection of standout elements. However, he makes the wise effort to incorporate these details into commercial ensembles, offering the best of both worlds–safe and daring.

Soar Spring 2010

Written by Carl on Sunday, August 23rd, 2009 | 2009, 2010, lookbooks/presentations, soar, spring, spring 2010

British designer Tim Soar understands the importance of continuity. With a new collection entitled “Folding Diagrams for a Spread Squash”, Soar continues a gradual progression of his own version of minimalism. Soar explains his inspiration of spread squash as its very definition of being pulled “in (nearly) opposite directions to form a new shape with an existing base.” In this same vein, Soar transforms traditional menswear into a range that is very boxy. With silhouettes pulled and shaped in a futuristic manner, Soar defies contemporary standards for a look that is uniform, yet breaks the mold. Pressed or wrinkled, the collection interjects menswear with spontaneity and a certain liveliness. Soar’s suits are instantly distinguishable from the majority, while enabling its wearer to inhibit a space that takes the best of casual and dress for a modern adventure.

Soar Fall 2009

Tim Soar’s minimalist collection is positively stunning. Unadorned with embellishments and void of any great amount of color, Soar’s creations only have what matters most; their fit, sleek cut, and immaculate tailoring. It is difficult to achieve a silhouette that begins narrow, opens up, and still remains appealing, but Soar has done just that. Scaling back his Yohji-esque proportions for an understated elegance, Soar creates a modern look. The jackets are narrow with broad shoulders, yet perfectly suit trousers that maintain a loose silhouette without being overly wide. Not to be lost in the shuffle next season, Soar creates a clean signature look by moving buttons and fasteners far right instead of dead center. This subtle change not only moves fashion forward, but provides longevity.

SOAR Fall 2008

Written by Carl on Monday, September 29th, 2008 | 2008, Fall 2008, fall, lookbooks/presentations, soar

“For a year or two I had felt an increasingly strong urge to move into fashion design. I felt that I had something to say about modern menswear and that it was time to move on from the flippant to something more serious. I was tired of seeing gimmicky menswear that was badly made and did not fit correctly. I set out to produce clothes that are a synthesis of minimalism and the avant-garde made to the highest possible standards.” -Tim Soar of SOAR

b Store & SOAR @ Home House London

Written by Carl on Monday, September 29th, 2008 | 2009, Runway, Spring 2009, b store, soar, spring

This year, both b Store and SOAR presented their collections at the Home House on Portman Square.  B Store’s spring 2009 collection is “inspired by a picnic on the secluded Temple Island in Henley on Thames” and has “a quintessentially English quality.” Take note of the straw boaters by Christine Bec and the rolled cuffs. SOAR’s spring 2009 collection encompasses Tim Soar’s minimalist approach, but with the addition of prints. Both lines will be available at b Store London during the spring.
