Showing his menswear collection alongside womenswear this season, Yigal Azrouël’s point of view was lost in translation. Less disheveled than usual, there appeared to be a clean break between savvy city fashion and a humble perspective, noted by nordic prints. From conservative cuts and boxy numbers to forced draping, Azrouël met the chaotic season with far too many references. Leaning towards an edgier man, it was here that the collection not only showed its strengths, but a new light in which to cast Azrouël’s easygoing style.

Yigal Azrouël describes his inspiration for spring 2010 as “nomadic civility.” If by nomadic, he means get out of the bed, hop in a shower, hop out and put on the nearest clothes, then we are on the same page. The spring collection delivers the same disheveled look we have been accustomed to, but appears more nonchalant than last seasons–if that is at all possible. The pieces are long, worn-in, relaxed and thin–hardly the makings of a job interview. It’s a casual, laid-back anything goes type of collection. Tanks over long sleeved tops, sleeveless leather, asymmetrical knits and a plenitude of stripes make for a concise fashionable mess that is indeed endearing.

The laid-back spring collection of Yigal Azrouël is all about the tasseled lived-in thrown together look of picking pieces from one’s own wardrobe. Azrouël is definitely not afraid of color with pops of yellow, purple, green, and blue bursting through subdued hues of gray and black. The subtle but cheery color palette and deconstructed wardrobe of gingham and plaid offer this season a relaxed youthful carelessness.
