New York Fashion Week | Thom Browne Fall 2010

Written by Carl on Monday, February 15th, 2010 | 2010, Runway, albert krarup, alexander johansson, alexandre cunha, bastiaan ninaber, cole mohr, fall, fall 2010, guy robinson, jakob hybholt, jeremy young, joan pedrola, lenz von johnston, mark cox, max rogers, new york fashion week, patrick kafka, ryan kennedy, ryan koning, simon nessman, stéphane olivier, thom browne, travis davenport

Undeniably one of menswear’s most rebellious designers, Thom Browne looks to old New York as his inspiration for fall’s collection. Letting out his shrunken silhouette, the outlandish designer took to exaggerated proportions to convey an overindulgent sense of luxury. With fur spilling out of the unlikeliest places, Browne turned to outerwear as a clear component of the collection’s worth, while elongated knits and tops made a wild splash against Browne’s impeccably tailored suiting. Whether his proportions are large or small, fall’s outing reaffirms Browne’s unwillingness to compromise his vision to the whims of the times.

Milan Fashion Week | D&G Fall 2010

Written by Carl on Tuesday, January 19th, 2010 | 2010, Eddie Klint, Runway, adam senn, arthur kulkov, brian davenport, d&g, evandro soldati, fall, fall 2010, garrett neff, jakob hybholt, jamie jewitt, janice fronimakis, max rogers, milan fashion week, nils butler, oscar spendrup, patrick kafka, ryan bertroche, ryan taylor, sam webb, simon nessman, terron wood, texas olsson, theo hall, tom warren, travis davenport, vladimir ivanov

With a ski pass in hand and voluminous layering at work, D&G’s models are ready to hit the slopes. Juxtaposing a formal sensibility with the casualness of winter’s outdoor sports, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana set in motion a playful season of that caters to many functions. While ski pants and jeans are loose and low-slung, knits are either fitted or chunky for use as outerwear. Meanwhile, in a typical Dolce & Gabbana fashion, evening wear makes an appearance in a striking winter white, proving that no matter the location, the D&G man is set–even if that includes a Mickey Mouse motif.

Milan Fashion Week | John Richmond Fall 2010

Written by Carl on Monday, January 18th, 2010 | 2010, Runway, ben hill, brian davenport, fall, fall 2010, garrett neff, gerhard freidl, james hampson, john richmond, julien quévenne, matt benstead, milan fashion week, nils lawton, stéphane olivier, terron wood, travis davenport

A byproduct of old and new ideas, the latest collection from John Richmond tests age sensibilities with garments that multigenerational. The standard suit is let out and reformed with a punk attitude, while classic staples like the trench become modern with a quilted update. Meanwhile, eveningwear is juxtaposed with casual denim and the grandpa sweater left in tact for character. A well-rounded figure, John Richmond’s man approaches the fall season with an unwavering determination to progress his style, while also paying a nod to the classics.

Milan Fashion Week | Bottega Veneta Fall 2010

Written by Carl on Sunday, January 17th, 2010 | 2010, Eddie Klint, Jesper Lund, Runway, arthur sales, baptiste demay, bottega veneta, brian davenport, evandro soldati, fall, fall 2010, florian bourdila, garrett neff, gordon bothe, janice fronimakis, lasse pedersen, lucas mascarini, mathias bergh, matt benstead, max motta, milan fashion week, nils butler, oscar spendrup, patrick kafka, philipp bierbaum, ryan taylor, sean opry, sebastian lund, simon nessman, taylor fuchs, terron wood, travis davenport, vladimir ivanov, william eustace

Summing up this season’s collection, Bottega Veneta creative director Tomas Maier explained that with this collection, they “wanted to address the different ways men visualize themselves. Bottega Veneta’s goal is always to expand the vocabulary of men’s wear, to add individuality and expression. So there is sophistication, but also playfulness, bravado, eccentricity, rebelliousness – it all depends on how it’s put together.” Taking that cue, Maier set about with presenting looks for the man of any occasion. While a loose fitted layering of activewear hinted at a chic casualness, low slung denim provided for a sharp contrast against the collection’s more formal approach. The finer points of the collection were constructed by the marriage of high-waist trousers and boxy blazers. Whether dressed in black or a deep purple, Maier’s fall range delivered a functional nonchalance that is ultimately refreshing.

Fall 2010 | Ermenegildo Zegna

Written by Carl on Saturday, January 16th, 2010 | 2010, Runway, adrian wlodarski, alex loomans, arthur daniyarov, bastiaan ninaber, brian davenport, fall, fall 2010, francisco lachowski, gordon bothe, jacob coupe, jakob hybholt, lasse pedersen, lucas mascarini, matt benstead, mikus lasmanis, milan fashion week, nicolas ripoll, patrick kafka, simon nessman, terron wood, thomas hoefnagels, travis davenport, zegna

Playing it safe, Ermenegildo Zegna looks to well-tailored suiting to make this season’s statement. Turning to gray and navy, the label’s strength rests with suiting for day and evening. Although suiting tends to be timeless, it’s a shame Emenegildo Zegna’s selection of outerwear was so limited as the pieces they did present were meticulous. Cut generously, the collection’s outerwear offers a modern wardrobe update without giving into temporary trends.

Fall 2010 | Dolce & Gabbana

Written by Carl on Saturday, January 16th, 2010 | 2010, Clément Chabernaud, Eddie Klint, Runway, adam senn, arthur kulkov, david gandy, dolce & gabbana, evandro soldati, fall, fall 2010, felix schopgens, francisco lachowski, garrett neff, jakob hybholt, jamie jewitt, janice fronimakis, joan pedrola, julienne quevenne, mark cox, marlon teixeira, mathias bergh, matt benstead, milan fashion week, nils butler, noah mills, oscar spendrup, robert rae, ryan taylor, sam webb, sebastian lund, simon nessman, terron wood, texas olsson, theo hall, thomas hoefnagels, tobias sørensen, travis davenport, travis hanson, vladimir ivanov, will defiel

Dolce & Gabbana tones down the luxe factor this season with a varied collection of the usual pieces, but a gritty element. Void of color and not afraid of a rip, hole or two, the range’s most notable pieces are found in the disheveled tanks, knits and longjohns. Alternatively, Dolce & Gabbana’s man, who is known to work with his hands is championed by the oil-like wash given to the collection’s denim. Finally, speckled knits, tweed and velvet find their way into this season’s offerings for those special occasions.
