Back to the Basics — Burberry Prorsum Fall 2009

bp Back to the Basics Burberry Prorsum Fall 2009

So far, this season is feeling an absence of color. Tough economic times call for a refocus on the basics. Nostalgic of Burberry’s history, Burberry Creative Director Christopher Bailey sent a collection of oversized coats down the runway. Discussing his collection after the show, Bailey shared with Reuters that he “wanted to go back to the DNA and roots of what Burberry’s heritage is about, which is why [he] did so much outerwear, so many trench coats, [he] wanted the Burberry check to be in a very strong way,” Hopefully next season brings one of the coldest winters or Mr. Bailey is in trouble. Highlights of the collection included tube scarves, neck ties, newsboy hats, belted scarves, oversized knits and velvet evening wear.

I usually like Bailey’s collections, and though this one is in the spirit of the previous, I have one problem : the cut of the pants ! let’s call them fat pants.
Designers have tried for years to make people look skinnier than they really are. This collection is almost counterproductive. And whereas Lanvin tries to reinterprete basics with modern cuts and fabrics, this is just a ‘copy/paste’ of the past. If we want wide-approxymately cut-high waisted pants, we just have to buy vintage clothes (or go to the Gap…). My grand-pa would love this collection.

That is funny that you mention that because a lot of articles already floating out there describe this collection as slim/skinny trousers paired with oversized outerwear.

Does Europe’s gap tend to carry clothes that are cut slim? In the US, nearly everything tends to be cut way too big and fit poorly.

Gap is not established in France, only Paris, their planning to open stores in the coming years, though. As mentionned it as a conservative mainsteam brand. Maybe J.Crew woul have been a more appropriate (even though I like some of their stuff).
Regarding the pants, I think they’re so different from what they used to be. In Burberry Prorsum’s previous collections, they were slimmer, with a wide hem (disco skinny…) I liked it, but those make these 28-inch waist models look wider than they are, and it’s neither loose, nore baggy, it’s just weirdly wide.
Moreover, the way they fall on the shoes is approximate (in a weird kind of way). It doesn’t look “négligé”… in english huhhh : classily messy (?).
That’s why I would say that this whole collection is ‘wide’.
    Whatever.
    Burberry is for old people.

I do notice that hem of the pants is pretty much excess, hence the weird ‘break’ on the shoes.

The only thing that I like from this collection is the little tie thingy. Might wanna try it myself hah!
