Three’s Company–Slated to receive their due respect, London Fashion Week kicks off this June, immediately following fashion weeks in Milan and Paris with menswear taking center stage. Championing alumni talent, the London College of Fashion Presents Emerging Talent at London Collections: Men. Hitting the catwalk are Asger Juel Larsen, Matteo Molinari and Domingo Rodriguez, showcasing their spring/summer 2013 collections. In addition, accessories designer Oliver Ruuger will have an installation. The alumni show on Friday, June 15, 2012 at the Royal Society of Arts, will see i-D fashion editor Elgar Johnson at the helm of styling.

A Man’s Perspective–Captured during London Fashion Week this past February, photographer Eilish McCormick passes onto us a couple firsthand snapshots featuring models Adam Holden (Select), Jake Shortall (AMCK), Jimmy Q (Select), Miles Better and Tom Lander (Select) as they appear on and off the runway.

Old Meets New–With a collection inspired by the 1970’s art house movement as well as British painter Lucian Freud, comfort label Oliver Spencer delights the runway during London’s latest fashion week. Sorting through an eclectic lot of faces, Spencer’s men don a collection that strongly incorporates pristine cuts, knitwear and a splash of color with bold hues. Among the various looks are patterned baseball jackets, fairisle, cardigans and much more including a debonair spread of boots and loafers for a collection that daringly combines a vintage feel with the gratuitous tailoring of today.

After Midnight–Taking a dark turn, Topman Design channels a young Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe for their fall/winter 2012 outing. Mixing and meshing rich textures for a rebellious season, a traditional English sensibility is juxtaposed with a relative edge. Alternating between tapered trousers and pants of PVC, Topman’s hero demonstrates a knack for clean dress with a modern spin. Translating Mapplethorpe’s lily print into graphic dressed silk shirting, the finishing touch to a collection of lush knits and structured outerwear is a range of rosaries, crafted by Husam El Odeh.

Worldly Fascination–Mathieu Kassovitz film La Haine, Jason Evans exhibition W’Happen and a dissection of European dress serve as the creative foundation to Christopher Shannon’s fall/winter 2012 collection. Looking outside the confines of the United Kingdom, foreign staples are reinterpreted for Shannon’s take on sportswear. From jacquard knitwear derived from supermarket window graphics in Paris to bandana prints inspired by American music artist Snoop Dogg, the collection takes possession of varied references, including singer Sinéad O’Connor and turns out a hodgepodge of modern styles. Affecting a uniform of bombers, shirting, joggers and other relaxed separates, a splash of trim and character go a long way in propelling a lineup ridden with personality and ease.

Quacks & Suits–Agi & Sam layered on their signature humor for their recent London Fashion Week showing. Revolving their fall/winter 2012 collection around Darwin’s Theory of Why the Chicken Crossed the Road, the men of Agi & Sam hit the catwalk battered and bruised but in the utmost style. With ducks and chickens as their fun design motif, serious menswear fundamentals were infused with a lightness of the heart. Combining intricate prints with interesting proportions, today’s fitted suit was dissected for a play on volume as well as separates. Juxtaposed with a British sensibility on steroids, delicious colors and prints aided a showing strong on substance and cheer. / Photos by Saty + Pratha.
