Icelandic author, Halldor Laxness’ book, Independent People serves as the inspiration for Jil Sander’s fall-winter 2017 men’s collection. Taking a look at the harsh environment of Iceland, Laxness’ book chronicles the struggle between man and nature. Jil Sander translates this idea into four themes: Disintegration, Neo-Brutalism, Solid Ground, and Zen.

While Disintegration represents the deteriorating relationship between man and nature, Neo-Brutalism focuses on raw beauty. Meanwhile, Solid Ground references earth with various colors and textures. Finally, Zen pays tribute to the arts. Together, these themes work together to progress Jil Sander’s minimal narrative.
Colors such as chalk grey draw inspiration from Iceland, while heavy coats and jackets combat the Nordic winter. A military influence pervades the collection as knitwear offers a play on texture. The lineup also features washed denim that mirror’s Earth’s ground. Finally, images disintegrate for the season’s quiet prints.
