GUESS was founded in 1981 in Los Angeles by the Marciano brothers, Georges, Maurice, Paul, and Armand. They had moved from the south of France with one product in mind. It was a slim-fit stonewashed denim jean, cut closer to European tailoring than the boxy American five-pocket of the era.
Bloomingdale’s in New York agreed to test two dozen pairs of the 3-Zip Marilyn jean. The run sold out in hours. Within a few years, the label was widely described as the brand that brought European denim to America.
Menswear arrived early and grew alongside the women’s line. It centered on denim and expanded into western shirts, leather jackets, knit polos, and slim trousers. The rise sat higher than the Levi’s and Lee silhouettes that dominated American closets at the time.
The design language pulled from Marlboro country and Italian sportswear at once. Faded indigo, triangle back patches, raw-edge pocket flags, and washed cotton twills placed GUESS closer to Calvin Klein and Diesel than to Wrangler or Gap.
Paul Marciano’s black-and-white advertising campaigns, shot by Wayne Maser and others, helped define the brand’s image. In 1990, GUESS won the CFDA award for the most influential ad campaign of the decade. The work also brought back-to-back Menswear Retailer of the Year nods at the MAGIC trade show.
The company went public in 1996. Licensing deals expanded the brand into watches, fragrance, eyewear, and footwear. New stores opened across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East through the 2000s.
Paul Marciano stepped back from day-to-day creative leadership in 2018 following an internal review. In August 2025, the founding family agreed to a $1.4 billion take-private deal with Authentic Brands Group, which closed in January 2026.
ABG holds 51 percent of the GUESS intellectual property. A consortium including Maurice and Paul Marciano, Paul’s son Nicolai Marciano, and CEO Carlos Alberini retained the remaining 49 percent of the IP and full ownership of the operating business and retail stores.
Today, GUESS Men sits in the accessible contemporary tier next to Diesel, Tommy Hilfiger, and Armani Exchange. It dresses a customer who wants denim-led American sportswear with a Mediterranean cut. The brand sells in roughly 100 countries through a mix of owned stores, department store concessions, and wholesale.
