Violence takes center stage on the runway once more this season with Jean Paul Gaultier looking to boxing for inspiration. Avoiding a stale blackout, Gaultier infuses his range with a brilliant mix of silhouettes and standouts modeled after the boxer’s uniform. With enough versatility to be taken in the direction of either casual or formal wear, robe-like outerwear, voluminous waistlines, tapered legs and multi-functional leather give shape to a plethora of ready-to-layer basics and suiting separates.

In efforts to promote Jean Paul Gaultier’s new fragrance Ma Dame, Martin Solveig collaborated with Dragonette’s Martina on the song “Boys & Girls”. The fun tongue-in-cheek music video was shot at Gaultier’s Paris headquarters. (Homotography)

Known for rebelling against the hand of conformity, it is not a surprise that the Jean Paul Gaultier spring 2010 collection breaks with traditional gender roles. Solid skirts and bustiers season an eclectic mix of reverse coloring, horizontal gradients and both prison and nautical stripes. The bustier acts as the collection’s central piece – appearing underneath a great deal of blazers as well as on its own. Contrasting trim adds depth to a collection geared towards a younger adventurous consumer. Bold and weightless, the collection’s sheer jackets are no surprise. If the aforementioned elements are not enough to warrant variety, Gaultier throws denim into the mix, not only cutting out swatches of fabric, but incorporating a tangled arrangement of bondage straps. As a final note, the collection’s persistent use of translucent Converse solidify its intended reach for a younger audience who is willing to put their trust in Gaultier, lay back and enjoy the ride.

spring2009 Style Watch: Spring 2009

Pictured are some pieces that stood out to me, because of their styling.

1. LOVE the oversized tee from Vivienne Westwood and the cut of the collar and hem.
2. LOVE the layered sheer sweater and tank from Louis Vuitton.
3. LOVE the cropped trousers and styling from Junya Watanabe.  A nice alternative to suiting shorts, which can be severe.
4. LOVE the pairing of cropped pants and high socks from Jean Paul Gaultier.

Jean Paul Gaultier, the creator of Madonna’s famous cone bra in the nineties, was once the assistant of French couturiers like Pierre Cardin and Jean Patou. His gender bending designs and theatrical presentations have given him the reputation of being the “enfant terrible” of fashion. He launched his first ready-to-wear collection in 1976 and it wasn’t until 1997 that he launched his couture collection, which often references different religions and cultures. Gaultier is known for using unconventional models on his runway such as older men and full-figured women, a contrary to the beauty idealized by the fashion world. His menswear, which debuted in 1984, often promotes the cross-over between genders like tube tops and skirts for men. In 1999, thirty-five percent the Jean Paul Gaultier label was purchased by Hermès, which led to the appointment of Gaultier at the French house in 2004.
