SOPHNET Fall 2009 — Poison Effect
By Hirofumi Kiyonaga
A word often, but often misused.
When exactly does something become necessary, anyway?
In this world, there is no way for anything to be completely clean, and hardly nothing can be perfect.
I always see and hear the word “eco.” As humans, we need to destroy the environment to survive as a species.
And as we pollute, we think about and make efforts to be more “eco” friendly.
Just like those people who live in big cities who feel the need to live a healthy lifestyle, they go jogging and breathe in all the pollutants and carbon monoxide.
I noticed the other day that 1 liter of mineral waters costs more than 1 liter of gasoline.
And people drive their hybrid cars as they gulp down their mineral water. So they do think about “eco”, but at times what really matters more is ego.
That’s why I don’t believe everything has to be a certain way, we can balance the not so clean and the hypocrisy in our daily lives.
and I think that “poison” is part of that “necessity.” And is it not because of that necessity that we are able to destroy what needs to be broken,
and makes us want to attempt to do new things!? To conquer poison with poison.
The definition may be a bit off, but it is not important to be conscious of those elements in our lives?
And to know that it’s not hypocritical, but totally appropriate to think that way.

The latest spring collection from SOPHNET is about finding a balance between casual streetwear and refined resort ready pieces. This is reinforced by the collection’s signature use of oriental flower and leaf prints. The prints transition smoothly into a color palette driven by deep mustards and variants of blue that nicely dress up an array of pieces — perfect for the casual wearer who wants to try something a little outside their comfort area.
I think the patchwork on the jacket featured in the first picture is interesting, but I’m conflicted on the shelf life of a piece that is so distinct. Regardless, I think this is a nice aesthetically pleasing collection of functional silhouettes that are not going anywhere anytime soon.
