Turning the season’s sixties inspirations inside out, there was definitely subversive elements at work for Yves Saint Laurent creative director Stefano Pilati’s latest collection. Playing a mischievous hand at modesty, Pilati blended a formal outing with his exaggerated silhouettes for a cheeky tension of pieces. From relaxed to fitted in terms of shape and a shift in details, ranging from a lack of lapels to enlarged lapels, the collection became a game of changing elements. Regardless of direction, fall’s lineup exercised restraint for a cohesive showing of rigid formality unpacked.

Making his mark on Dior Homme with a keen eye for cut and movement, Kris Van Assche further expanded his vision with a hand at a very stylized presentation. Moody but graceful, the man of Dior Homme was well-suited with a wardrobe of interchangeable pieces that ushered in a lineup of raw edges and elegant lines. Carving out a middle ground between formal and casual, the collection found its footing with sensible pieces and a hint of drama. Infusing billowing silhouettes from trousers to outerwear with a subtle western influence, an interesting kaleidoscope of ideas came together for a showing of sensitivity with a backbone.

Kenzo creative director Antonio Marras looks to detective stories for the inspiration of fall’s smart collection. Fusing both formal and casual styles, the Kenzo man is put together with a little fun and mystery. From the highbrow detective and mischievous villain to the common civilian, Marras’ collection comes together with a quaint British sensibility. Bringing the scholar out to play, printed knits join the collection’s consistent core of jackets that provide structure as well as a relaxed outing. Turning to fine leather, boots add a rebellious edge, while kilts add an old touch made new. Altogether a meshing of various characters with intensive personalities, the new Kenzo collection offers a wardrobe for many a man come the fall 2011 season.

Expanding on the modern uniform, Kris Van Assche infuses the suit with more volume for an effortless cool. Letting out sleeves and modeling tops after a simple sweatshirt, essentials come together in a modest black, where fate is determined by the details. With larger than life jackets and tops as the collection’s focus, trousers get an easy straight cut while Van Asshe also debuts his new collection of bags in collaboration with Eastpak. Rounding out the range, brown surfaces to highlight one final focus on design and tailoring.
