“Marcel is a very intuitive model. He is extremely creative and brings a lot of his own ideas and feelings into the image. His unique beauty only adds to the appeal.” — Matthew Kristall

Marcel Castenmiller may easily transition into the role of a gentleman, but that does not mean he has to like the clothes. Shooting a collections story with photographer Lowe Seger and stylist Toby Grimditch, Marcel may not have been a fan of the wardrobe, but he was a pleasure to work with. Seger recalls not remembering how Marcel got booked, but “when [he] saw him on the day of the shoot, [he] really really loved him.” Quite the versatile model, Marcel possesses that certain quality that enables him to go edgy and then easily exude a certain refinement.

Posi+tive’s recent feature on fashion student and model Coco Young just happens to include Marcel Castenmiller, who joins in on a crazy day captured by photographer Dana Lauren Goldstein. Along for a wild ride, not a thing is out of line, ranging from jumping on dump trucks to kissing grown men, anything goes in the free-spirited life of Marcel.

Following our introduction of how Marcel Castenmiller began his career as a model, we dive into our first round of questions with the Canadian model to get the basics out of the way.
What was your first shoot?
Marcel: I think it was for an Asian magazine. I was late and I paid a taxi driver a twenty dollar bill to drive two avenues. I had taken the wrong subway train and ended up too far away from the original address. From there I went with the photographer to Central Park. I’m sure that story is very common in New York.
Your hair seems like it would be a prized possession. Would you cut it?
Marcel: I don’t know. I’ve never liked hair cuts, and so far it’s been working alright with the length. I bet it’ll stay at a certain length, not too long. So yes I guess that would mean I’ll get a cut done.
The inevitable question…how has modeling changed your life?
Marcel: Modeling has given me the chance to live in different cities. I feel that’s one of the most important things for me growing up. Living in a suburb for 19 years can really make you fall behind as a human being, I’m so happy to be in cities like Paris and New York and really feel everyday and live!
Are you aware of model followings…particularly yours?
Marcel: I’m aware. I don’t understand why people try to contact me online. I understand them being a fan, but I really wouldn’t keep in touch with someone I know nothing about or have never met in person.

Standing at 6′ 2″ as one of the industry’s few coveted long-haired models, Marcel Castenmiller is yet another prized Canadian import. Growing up in a town called Port Moody in the Province of British Columbia, it was a two-month road trip with photographer Ryan McGinley that brought the former art student a step closer to signing with New York modeling agency DNA in 2008. Shortly after, Marcel was getting his feet wet with a Theory campaign and from there, the rest is history. From Kenzo’s leading star for two seasons and his regular presence on the runway to a strong portfolio of beautiful editorials, Marcel delivers as a well-rounded model.

Marcel Castenmiller’s career has been heating up ever since he became the face of Kenzo. He caught the eyes of many designers, starring in their campaigns, including Sandro, Gucci, Versace, United Colors of Benetton and Giuliano Fujiwara. Marcel has also walked for several major houses such as Hermés, Ann Demeulemeester, Burberry, Gucci and Paul Smith. The Canadian model is best known for his long hair and androgynous look.
