Phillip Lim Fall 2009

Phillip Lim’s menswear shows have a propen­sity to act in the same capac­ity as a movie trailer. Focus­ing pri­mar­ily on his wom­enswear line, only a small selec­tion from the menswear line makes it to New York Fash­ion Week. Over the course of the last cou­ple sea­sons, this small show­ing has been either a hit or miss, often lack­ing in vari­ety. This time around, Lim excels in show­cas­ing the direc­tion of the lat­est col­lec­tion. Lim always designs with a boy­ish charm, most fre­quently seen in his cropped jack­ets, but this col­lec­tion is a bit dif­fer­ent. This sea­son, the Phillip Lim boy is tak­ing a more relaxed approach to fash­ion as he plays the role of the bad boy. The band jacket gets rein­ter­preted as a vest and shirt, while shoes and shirts adorned with studs fall per­fectly in line with leather dri­ver gloves. Watch out Prada, it looks like the Lim boy just might be your rival this fall.
