Expressed through the medium of photography to bring awareness to The Somaly Mam Foundation, Red’s Jonathan Kroppmann is one of sixty subjects photographed by Michael Angelo for Wonderland Beauty Parlor. Whereas make-up to most represent the tools of free expression, an item as simple as lipstick can mark the plight of young girls in countries like Cambodia who are forced to wear red lipstick to be sold as slaves in brothel. In great contrast, Angelo reclaims red lipstick as a symbol of freedom and empowerment by showcasing unique individuals who pave a path of their own in The Lipstick Portraits. As Angelo shared, “After 20 years of collaborating with people in the realm of appearance, I have had a unique opportunity to explore the role of beauty in our culture and learn some deep truths about it. I have worked with people who are considered to be amongst the most beautiful in the world and found them to be significantly less so, and I have worked with some exceptionally unusual looking characters who have awed me with the beauty of their substance.”
The Somaly Mam Foundation’s mission is “to give victims and survivors a voice in their lives, liberate victims, end slavery, and empower survivors as they create and sustain lives of dignity.”
