Through The Sea of Black — Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2009

Opening Milan Fashion Week, Dolce & Gabbana are among the first to show. For inspiration, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana returned to their heritage, opening the show with black and white images of Sicily. With the Killer’s latest single “Human” setting the tone, the presentation of clothing took place against a bleak black atmosphere.

Dolce & Gabbana presented their typical mix of formal, casual, and skin. Black, leather velvet, holdalls and the full-length coat.  This season is all about the sophisticated man, leather coats and holdalls. Not to get lost in the sea of leather and velvet, the show picked up with the addition of quilted trousers and jackets; an interesting idea, but not the best execution. The Dolce & Gabbana show began strong, but lost momentum as sheen and colors like red, fushia and pink began to dominate the runway. Spring 2009 is the season of pajamas.  This time around, the quilted look takes over.

Hi, I’ve been visiting this site for a while now (love it, by-the-way) and I’d like to start leaving comments with the fall 2009 shows…
Before I start : I’m 19, french, and discovered fashion through Hedi Slimane’s work at Dior Homme.

No need to say that Dolce & Gabbana are far from what I like. Once again, this collection is everything but progressive fashion. It manages, as always, to be both macho and ultra-gay. Douchebags love D&G for a reason. I’m not gonna say more as I think that D&G are irrelevant (like most italian brands — except maybe Prada) in today’s fashion landscape. The models they chose really shows how they’re stuck in the 90’s idea of masculinity.

    Hello!

I agree with so many of those sentiments. I struggle with my opinion of Dolce & Gabbana though, because I feel like there is so much potential that can be seen in their clean simple pieces, but then Domenico and Stefano ruin it by catering to their built in base that buy the most tacky, flamboyant pieces they can. I was actually enjoying this collection until the brightly colored and quilted pieces started coming out.

I think the words ‘tacky’ and ‘flamboyant’ you used are well-chosen.
I also agree with the fact that they have potential and they have participated a lot in the “suit re-interpetation” and democratisation by making it ok to wear a suit jacket with jeans, for example.
I also think that they make good footwear, especially sneakers.
But they ruined everything by making their brands too “bling bling” by over-using fancy fabrics and exposing their logo too much (Stefano Pilati needs to watch himself there too…)
As for the colors, it’s just bad taste — that’s actually the one thing you can’t reproach Kris Van Assche with — Maybe they should unite their strenghts…
As for the quilted trousers and jackets : nobody wants to look like a big chanel bag!…

LOL@ As for the quilted trousers and jackets : nobody wants to look like a big chanel bag!…

    HAHA.

Unlike Daftboy I was among the tragic ones who started to know fashion from D&G. Looking back at those days I cringe upon my taste and knowledge of fashion .I learned that afterall fashion is not just about bling bling, flamboyance and LOGO a go go!

This collection screams yawn! I don’t really much difference from their previous collections.
