With a collection titled “The Painter”, it is difficult not to compare the latest from Wooyoungmi with Alexander McQueen’s collection of similar concept. Whereas McQueen rested on his quirks, incorporating a painter’s sloppy work into his garments, Wooyoungmi took a more thoughtful approach. Interrupting her usual clean straight lines, Wooyoungmi saw to a partial dissection that imitates the tension between tradition and functional use from the standpoint of a painter. When sleeves are not left exposed at mid-length, they are abruptly halved for a disheveled cropped look. Trousers face the same treatment along with a makeshift apron layer. The result is a daring collection that differentiates itself by rejecting the real world notion of practicality for its own version.
