L’Officiel Hommes #19 | Keep It Goin’ Louder–Arthur Sales by Milan Vukmirovic

Landing a dedicated issue of L’Officiel Hommes is a significant career highlight in the life of a model, but unfortunately for Arthur Sales, this honor is tainted by controversy. In one of the many editorials photographed by Milan Vukmirovic, dark makeup is applied to Arthur as well as an afro. After a whirlwind of a year for female models undergoing blackface with less than favorable reactions, it is surprising to say the least that L’Officiel Hommes would take a risk and charter this territory.

  1. Not okay. Seriously? There are too many African American male models to be playing games like this. I'm not even mad. Seriously, I'm just saddened. People still think like this. And to be quite honest, he looks like a fucking fool.

  6. This is ridiculous. So freaking tacky. I don't understand how people still think things like this are a good idea. It's depressing.

  11. I am just surprised that most people don't even understand blackface. This is hardly it. Only picture I could even find barely offensive (as a black man) is the one with the cross in his mouth but really none of this offends me. I am not Jesse Jackson and this in no way is actually close to mocking African Americans. Now if he had grits dripping from his mouth and he sat on a porch saying "ma say git gon n clean duh zink!" than yeah I would be offended. A little too much white guilt going on in here.

  16. I am a black female. I once went the museum of modern art to see the exhibition of a german artist who had been co-opted by the nazis into doing propaganda posters. My older companion did not see it as art. I told this story to a white Columbia art student who was annoyed at the statement/question is it art. My companion was a holocaust survivor. It is not art when you live through it. White guilt?

  21. i think its just stupid to publish these after all the controversy similar womenswear editorials caused. but just as it did before these images will get people talking therefore giving the magazine the hype it wants and needs – that's how they sell advertising! so people, if you don't want to see anymore of this stop giving it attention!

  26. people, stop seeing racism on everything. if he was dressed like a chinese would it be because they don't like chinese people?
open your mind and try to understand the whole concept of the shoot. i think there's more than a white guy pretending to be black.
i think arthur and milan did a great job here. great photos, beautiful model. waiting for the remaining spreads of the issue

  31. Epic fail on the part of L'Officiel. I was totally gonna buy this issue, until I saw this mess of an editorial. Shit like this doesn't help the perception of the fashion industry as inherently racist, and is a further slap in the face of black male models, who have to work it twice as hard to get the 2 percent of the work they currently get. Has L'Officiel ever even had a black male on it's cover?

  36. “i don’t really care about the racism but he just looks dumb… it’s so heavily photoshopped; he doesn’t even look human. he looks like the old navy mannequins!”
true. People need to look past all the controversy and take the art as it is.

  52. This is silly. I don’t think it’s silly because of the black face thing, I think it is because the shoot looks campy and cheesy. My question is, does anyone no what the article was about? Maybe they were trying to make some political statement about the US, It is a French magazine. It’s not like they tried to trick the audience into thinking the guy was black. His arms and chest were still white. I think as black people, culturally we’ve grown too sensitive. We are ready to cry wolf about everything. Of course we know there is still a lot of racism in the world but when we start complaining about Axe commercials because the guy was made of chocolate, it gets to the point were the media is walking on eggshells with “black matters”, and everything gets convoluted. No point is made but don’t offend the “blacks”.

  57. ONE WORD – LAME!!!!!!!!!!! First of all it's offensive and second it's really lame of Milan to copy the work of the other photographers who did the same thing with female models recently. Trying to jump on the controversy boat after it sailed to get attention for your work and the magazine and then doing it in a lowe quality way – come on. The quality of the photography and the styling is really bordering on cheeszy !

Learn a lesson from Helmut Newton – if your going to do something that some people may find offensive – at least make it visually sophisticated and visually stunning. By doing a sloppy job you look bad all around.

It wouldn't mean they don't like Chinese people, but if he's yellowface, YES it would by freaking offensive too.

  66. I think so too, Lucio!
The photos are well done, and they show the miscigenation of all kind of races and cultures (soooo common in Brazil, the birth place of Arthur Sales). I don't think it's supposed to be racist, it's supposed to bring concepts together, not apart.

But maybe that's exactly what the magazine wants: controversy.
As the quot says: there's no such thing as bad publicity…

  70. i personally think it would have been awesome to have a white model and a black model with faces/bodies that were half their natural color and half the opposite race's color. like a true black and white statement.

  75. Simple question, whats the reason behind painting these white models black? Why not just hire a black model? Or would that not suit your target audience?

  80. Apparently what's really too edgy in this industry is actually hiring a black guy.

And damn, if you're going to trot out the "but it's Aaaaaart" defense, the "art" shouldn't suck.

  85. I'M A BLACK WOMAN I DON'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THIS PHOTOS, IT'S SIMPLY CALLED ART OF STYLING!…… I THINK WE BLACK PEOPLE OVER REACT WHEN NON-BLACKS USE THE TERM BLACK OR DO ANYTHING BLACK…. RELAX BROTHERS AND SISTERS CHANGE WILL ONLY START WHEN YOU START BELIEVE IN YOUR SELVES.

  90. It seems like the fashion shoot is influenced by the french film, Agathe Clery, which came out sometime in 2008~2009, about a cosmetic saleswoman whose skin turns darker due to hyper pigmentation. Think it raises racial discussion, not discrimination, etc. I would think if this was the case, then wouldn't fake tanning and skin bleaching also end up being racial issues, not just "fashionable" options? Having said that, aesthetics wise, I don't like the shoot itself – but not because of any colour-related reasons.

  95. It's actually paying homage to the amazingly cool style african americans have had for a long time. From dapper jazz players (Duke Ellington) and geniuses (Miles Davis (check some of his 80s styling… whacky stuff!)) to the shut-up-mutha-fucka meanness of Black Panthers (it's not my intention to de-politize their actions).
The white models portrayed here want to convert themselves and pay homage to all those great people and its symbolized through the painting.
I really don't see anything offensive here apart from the naivety of the idea.

  100. This is actually disgusting! I am appalled that people don't understand the history of Blackface and how racially demeaning it is. I am an African American woman who is shocked that there are people on here agreeing with this mockery. This isn't art. This is Ayrianism . The fact that someone would portray an ad like this makes a joke of all the pain and anguish that people of African descent had to endure during the Al Jolson era and beyond. For centuries African peoples have been dehumanized and degraded by Europeans, since the beginning of slavery and I see no end in sight. It's up to intelligent African persons such as myself to point out hate propaganda and expose it for what it really is. This is racism pure and simple and anyone who says different is purely delusional. Wake up African peoples and stop letting Europeans make fun of your entire existence!

  105. Brazilians always say theirs is a racism free society. Hardly! I don’t remember seeing a blonde girls of German heritage being “discovered” in the favelas! Let’s get real.
