A Boy Named TellTell Carlson was discovered in 2000 at the age of thirteen at a Litchfield fair in Connecticut, but it was not until a chance competition in Florida that the budding model was sent on a new course. Traveling to New York for his big break, the first years proved difficult for Tell. At that moment, he represented the complete opposite of what casting directors looked for–he was a lanky kid with long hair and an androgynous appeal. However, attending an open casting for Dior Homme in 2003, ran at the time by Hedi Slimane’s first assistant Kris Van Assche, Tell’s career as a model was soon to get the momentum it needed. Cast for Dior Homme’s spring 2004 campaign, Tell encompassed Slimane’s new vision for fashion. The Dior man was the culmination of a youthful energy that had manifested itself in the marriage of rock music, grandeur and a peculiar love for the boyish frame. Part of a new wave of models, who set the groundwork for several of today’s brightest stars, Tell entered modeling with a hungry thirst to learn more about the world of fashion and made a quick exit with tools of experience that have catapulted him into roles in styling, management and sales. One of the core stories in our premiere issue, it was truly an honor to not only work with Tell, but get to know more about his days as a model.
