America’s Next Top Model is officially back with cycle 21, and guys enter the competition for the second time. Not one to shy away from an over-the-top moment, Tyra Banks kicked off the episode with a skit, revealing a dream of a younger her thinking that Miss J should come back to the show, this time with a seat on the judging panel. Later in the episode, Miss J made a dramatic runway entrance before cycle 21’s hopefuls hit the catwalk.
ANTM Meets the Real World
Surprisingly, the show really amped up the guys and girls dynamic with the premiere, showing a lot of clips with contestants talking about their type and hooking up. The contestants even walked and posed for the opposite sex, using a double-sided mirror…a double-sided mirror that defeated the purpose of a double-sided mirror once the girls started screaming on the other side, making their presence apparent.
Models Hit the Runway
Cory, I’m so androgynous from cycle 20, was the host of the first runway, giving the contestants the announcement that they would be doing an EDM-inspired catwalk. For those that don’t know, as Cory explained, “EDM stands for Electronic Dance Music.” Going with this theme, Tyra emerged from an opening in the ceiling, wearing a mesh number and glow-in-the-dark paint.
After that exciting introduction, the models hit the catwalk in guys and girls pairings, stopping at the foot of the runway for a selfie moment. Later, the models were tasked with presenting their best selfies to the judges, complete with whatever sponsored app the show was pushing and a hashtag that described them. If course, Adam would be Tarzan…
Meet the Contestants
They haven’t really shown much of Matthew yet, so we are anxious to see what he’s all about. Shei, on the other hand, does go-go dancing and has a killer look! We’re all aboard.
As we assumed, people couldn’t help but make the Tyson Beckford / Keith comparison. Get this; they even share the same birthday! The only thing notable about Ivy so far is that she liked Cory from last season. We’ll reserve judgment.
Denzel nearly killed us with his mom’s advice that basically rehashed is you’ll lose money chasing women, but never lose women chasing money. Meanwhile, we loved Mirjana’s tough girl attitude and Eastern European features, thanks to her Serbian heritage.
We still think Ben looks a lot like Roberto Bolle and love his flushed cheeks, but a triple threat he is not. The acting, dancing, and singing had us in despair. Chantelle is an inspiring story for all; we can’t wait to see more.
The Elimination
Tonight started with 31 contestants that had to be cut down to 22. The contestants found out if they were safe or out of the competition with a not-so-friendly game of bowling. After each model hopeful bowled, the screen popped up with a ‘Yay’ or ‘Sorry’. Next week, the final 22 compete for a top 14 as they have their first photo shoot with Yu Tsai. We can’t wait! See you then!
