Raf Simons crafts a concise narrative to establish his mark as Calvin Klein chief creative officer. Picking up where he left off for his debut collection for Calvin Klein 205W39NYC, Simons dissects Americana themes. An exploration of Hollywood and cinema also inform the season as references go. Talking about his spring-summer 2018 collection, Simons says, “It’s about American horror and American beauty.” The Belgian designer continues, “Fashion tries to hide the horror and embrace only beauty. But they are both a part of life. This collection is a celebration of that: a celebration of American life.” Adding his signature brand of quirk to classic shapes, Simons works with nylon, rubber, and hand-painted leather. Color blocking also plays a significant role in giving the collection its character.
