#UseTheExisting: Ermenegildo Zegna Unveils Spring ’20 Collection

The Fashionisto / Published June 16, 2019

Reinvention and “re-thinking” are at the forefront of Ermenegildo Zegna’s spring-summer 2020 collection. Just as the fashion house’s show took place at a neglected industrial building that’s soon to be a reenergized health and science hub, Ermenegildo Zegna tackles textiles on the quest to create new fabrics. The season unfolds under the theme of #UseTheExisting.

As artistic director Alessandro Sartori shares, It is our duty as denizens of this world to live responsibly. The designer explains, I want to do it using the creative means I have at my disposal, which extend from the materiality of fabric-making to the exquisite technicality of tailoring to the highly communicative aspect of show-making.

Sartori continues, Everything is connected, and everything conveys the same idea: we do not need to create the new from scratch, but we can reuse and reinvent the existing, getting progressive fabrics out of discarded ones, translating traditional techniques into innovative lifetime tailoring, turning an abandoned place into an area of creation.

Relaxed, breathable silhouettes inform contemporary style with a focus on making tailoring modern. The collection seamlessly flows from a slouchy tee and gradient trousers to graphic coats and elegant suits. A hero piece for sustainable fashion, the lineup features the Achill suit, which is made from wool remnants, courtesy of Zegna’s Achill farm.
