The most anticipated show of the season, Virgil Abloh made his debut as the new artistic director for Louis Vuitton menswear. For spring-summer 2019, Abloh introduces us to his world on a larger scale. Starting a new chapter for Louis Vuitton, Abloh sent white tailoring down a rainbow catwalk on black models. The diverse casting was a key component to kicking off a new era that sees famous faces such as Kid Cudi and A$AP Nast hitting the catwalk. Abloh also had a star-studded front row that included Kanye West, A$AP Rocky, and Rihanna. It’s easy to get caught up in the details around Abloh’s collection, but that is in part integral to his appointment. Bringing the streetwear sensibilities of Off-White to Louis Vuitton, Abloh rejected slim lines in favor of baggy silhouettes. Referencing The Wizard of Oz with images and floral prints, Abloh made a pop culture play. The lineup also brought to mind Helmut Lang with its use of harnesses and experimental layering. Finally, Louis Vuitton’s bags were front and center with Instagram-worthy details. PVC finishes, chain links, and bold colors demand a second look come spring.
