Salvatore Ferragamo Explores Modern Masculinity with Fall ’20 Collection

The Fashionisto / Published January 27, 2020

Salvatore Ferragamo goes the way of “Metamodern” style with its fall-winter 2020 men’s collection. Fitting for the start of a new decade, creative director Paul Andrew explores masculinity with six “‘alpha’ male archetypes.” Andrew reinterprets the images of the businessman, biker, racing driver, sailor, soldier, and surfer for the season. Retaining the core aesthetic of the uniform, he applies traditional Ferragamo artisanship to subvert the once-rigid assumptions enforced, using luxuriously tactile and fluid materials that blend together six masculine categories. The eclectic outlook results in a modernization of the suit with an emphasis on relaxed suiting shorts, slouchy pants, and unusual pairings like bench-made boots with fabric finishes. After all, Andrew explains, Clothes can define you: worn with thought and freedom they can also redefine you by serving as tools for experiment, evolution, and transformation. This power held by clothing is something I see is much more relished in womenswear: today I wanted to create clothes and accessories for change in a very masculine context. The designer continues, A man today is not obliged to assume a single, set role: he can be a multitude, and he can change his worn identity any time he wishes. That’s a freedom we want to explore in the 2020s.
