It’s always nice to receive emails with comments about the site, but this week, something new happened. Inspired by James Long’s fall collection entitled “Talismanic Brotherhood”, Sean McGirr, a reader and contributor to Dazed Digital’s newsletter felt compelled to share a piece he wrote after buying one of this season’s knits.
London-based menswear designer James Long is approaching this season with a continuation of his signature theme on protection. The garments complement one another in blood-red patent leather and more muted tones inspired by Buffalo Bill. A somber but stark beauty lies in colour references to the Silence of the Lambs and the Shining. As always each look is body-conscious, whilst the outfits non-specifically explore different ideals with which lie in protectionism, this season being that of the talismanic.
He continues to demonstrate his own linear language through this very conceptual collection. He continues to experiment with mohair, cashmere and reindeer suede to a very high standard. The knitwear is laddered appearing vulnerable and shredded but certainly not decrepit. For the men who struggle to stay warm in ‘winter’ coats Long’s sheepskin coats and knitted trousers are the dashing but modern pieces in which we will let ourselves insulate.
The paper-light leather so cleverly stands as Long’s foundation whilst intense embroidery features and craft in tapestry lets the mixing of textures catch the eye.
The macramé pieces are still here but return as a much lighter feature, creating the staple for a brand which has the fundamental elements to be quite big. Men who may find Pugh’s nail covered garments too edgy may see new light in James Long’s studded macramé.
