We cross paths with Power star David Fumero for our latest feature. Connecting in New York City, photographer Oscar Correcher captures the 43-year-old actor in a casual wardrobe for the man on the go.

Before Power, Fumero established his acting roots on One Life to Live. The Cuban actor played Cristian Vega between the years of 1998 and 2012. Reflecting on the transition from soap opera to drama, Fumero shares, “I think every actor enjoys playing different characters. The real challenging work always happens when you begin creating a character. His history, his relationship to other characters, the creation of past experiences that create a certain stimuli for his life that’s being written in the present.”

Fumero continues, “This is also something that can grow over time but, after playing Cristian for so long and within the fast pace of a soap opera, after a while it becomes an old hat. Playing someone new is always a challenge, but one that comes with a lot of excitement. All the fun is in the challenge!”

David Fumero on One Life to Live Fans

Although One Life to Live went off the air in 2013, the fandom remains strong. Fumero explains, “One Life to Live fans are awesome. They love Cristian! Especially since I’ve spent so much time on the screen with them. I’m still approached more because of Cristian than Mike. Plus, Cristian was a lot easier to love.”

David Fumero on the Magic of Power

Power is a blazing red hot show for Starz. The show’s season three premiere broke records for the network with an initial audience of 2.26 million. Discussing the draw of the hit series, Fumero notes, “Power is a show that always backs itself into a corner and then, with what you least expect, pulls itself out.”

Fumero also brings attention to Power’s setting, explaining, “And the fact that it’s based and shot in New York gives you the feeling that you’re watching through a window at something real. It’s conflict and drama at it’s best. Survival of the fittest in the jungle that New York really is. For me it’s like a contemporary Boardwalk Empire but at light speed.”

David Fumero on Playing Power’s Mike Sandoval

When it comes to his Power character, Mike Sandoval, Fumero is quick to explain, “Mike and I are nothing alike, which is why I’m having so much fun playing him.” Fumero continues, “In addition to loving my job playing Mike, I have greater enthusiasm being part of the world of Power. I love the feeling of contributing to such an amazing body of work.”

Season three of Power brought an interesting development to Fumero’s character. The season close shocked when Mike killed Greg, who had discovered his role as a double agent. Fumero recalls, “When I read the script where I shot Greg, as David, I was sad that that was the end of my work on the show with Andy Bean. But at the same time I felt like I was contributing to yet another shocking move on our show, and there’s a high behind that. I can tell you that season four is going to be a helluva ride! So…hold on!”
