Tea tree oil or melaleuca oil comes from the leaves a of a Melaleuca alternifolia, or tea tree, not to be confused with the common tea plant that is used for black and green teas. The tea tree is naturally found on the Northeast coast of New South Wales, Australia and Southeast Queensland.
What Does It Do?
Tea tree oil is known to kill certain bacteria and fungus, as well as reducing some allergic skin reactions. Used in low concentrations in washes and other cosmetics, when applied to the skin, tea tree oil can be useful in treating acne, lice, athlete’s foot, dandruff, scabies and ringworm. It can also be used as a local antiseptic to treat abrasions and cuts, insect stings and bites as well as various ailments such as toothache or sore throat. Sometimes, tea tree oil is even added to bath water to help treat coughs, pulmonary inflammation and bronchial congestion.
