Nicomede Talavera is a London-based designer currently in his placement year as a Central Saint Martin’s BA Menswear Fashion Design student. As of recent, Talavera is interning with other designers in London, New York and Paris before returning for his final year of studies in 2010. 2010 also marks the debut of Talavera’s fourteen-look capsule collection for spring inspired by photodynamic photography and futurism. Arturo and Anton Giulio Bragaglia’s 1911 portrait Searching and Slap was the initial source of inspiration, but continued research provided other outlets.

Looking to illustrate in his designs garments that could compare to the appropriateness of “movement; a tragic pause, a gesture of terror, the entire scene, the complete external unfolding of an intimate drama…[all] expressed in one single work”, Talavera surveyed the work of many artists. Eva Hesse’s Accession II inspired the embellished collars and shorts, while Larry Bell’s 20 Glass Tube acted as the motivation for a tonal color palette that resulted in metallic paneling, collars and waistbands. Finally, the shapes of Mel Bochner’s work helped shape the cut of the sleeves and overall silhouettes. Altogether, the various elements come together to create a modern collection with subtle hints of futurism. Mohair and waffle knits provide texture, while neoprene and nylon break away from tradition, offering diversity and the feel of movement–life.

  1. I love finding out about exciting young talent and there is so much around at the moment! We are going to be running an interview with the menswear design student next week actually, I’ll let you know when the post goes live.

  3. As if lately, I have been noticing that their collections are often more inspired than established labels. Can’t wait to see the interview!

  5. You can definitely see some similarities to some of the big current designers, but he does have something interesting to add.

  7. Hmm they're ok i guess, i'd probably buy a few if the ever hit the stores, however there is none that stands out from the crowd. As someone to be a designer it is only fair to compare Talavera to other designers, as they say he's young he's obviously talented but he also lacks experience, nothing special now, but lets wait a few years
