Covering the April 7, 2016 issue of Rolling Stone, James Franco catches up with the magazine in the midst of a production for The Mad Whale. The film was produced by Franco’s grad students at USC. A man that wears many hats, Franco explains, “It’s a total filmmaking class: In the fall, the writing students come up with a concept, and in the spring, I take over and we shoot it.”

The director of Why Him?, which stars Franco and Bryan Cranston, John Hamburg commented on the unusual personality. Hamburg confides, “On comedies, usually everybody’s fucking around between takes, but that’s not James’ process.” The director continues, “He’s making use of every single moment. The other day he was in hair and makeup, typing on a laptop. I said, ‘What are you doing, writing a novel?’ He said, ‘Yep.’ And he actually was!” Read more on RollingStone.com.
