Jared Leto goes shirtless, rocking a pair of light wash denim jeans for the latest cover of Rolling Stone. Promoting Suicide Squad, Leto talks about stepping into the role of The Joker, following Heath Ledger’s praised performance. The 44-year-old actor shares, “I think had it only been portrayed by Heath and it was never a comic book, maybe I would have felt that would be inappropriate.” However, Leto explains, “But I thought that given the history, it was OK. The good thing about other people having done this is that you know what direction not to head in.”

Diving into the psychology of The Joker, Leto explains how he got into the role. Leto says, “The Joker is incredibly comfortable with acts of violence.” Discussing his research, he continues, “I was watching real violence, consuming that. There’s a lot you can learn from seeing it. Not every act of violence is committed with frenzy, either. I remember learning that. People can be calm. They’ve made their choice and go and do something, and it’s not in a frenzy. It’s methodical and sometimes even hypnotic and deliberate.” Read more on RollingStone.com.

Jared Leto also covers the latest issue of British magazine ShortList. Talking to writer Kevin EG Perry about the character, Leto shares, “The Joker doesn’t have any rules. He says and does whatever he wants. I had a lot of fun having that freedom to say and do anything and everything. I think that’s compelling because a lot of us are so restrained in life.”

Asked if he’s a little weird in his methods, Leto responds, “I’m aware that a lot of people don’t approach their work in the same way I do.” Leto continues, “But that’s OK. Everybody has a different process, and I respect other people’s processes. I guess when you get the call to play The Joker, or certain other roles I’ve played, it’s kind of great that you’re getting thought about for these transformational opportunities, these roles that are really challenging…I don’t think I’m at the top of anyone’s lists for the next romantic comedy…” Read more on ShortList.com.
