James Smith

James Smith is a British model whose blue-eyed stare and unruly hair have given menswear a persuasive streak of youthful disobedience. His photographs can suggest a restless schoolboy or a more self-possessed leading man, a range that has taken him from experimental magazine stories to the formal world of Italian tailoring.

James emerged on the international runway in 2010, appearing for Jil Sander and Lanvin during his early seasons. Advertising for Yves Saint Laurent followed in spring 2011, placing him within one of menswear’s defining luxury houses while his career was still taking shape. His lean proportions suited the narrow silhouettes of the period, but his expressive face proved equally useful beyond the catwalk.

Editorial work became an important part of that identity. An early story for Sleek drew out his capacity for humor and exaggeration, while a fall-winter 2012 cover for SSAW put him within the more intimate tradition of fashion portraiture. Work for Dazed & Confused and GQ Italia further developed a portfolio in which he could look mischievous, withdrawn, or confrontational. The appeal was less a single fixed character than the possibility of changing the mood.

That flexibility also informed James’s advertising. He fronted Comodo Square’s fall-winter 2013 campaign and later appeared in Bespoken’s fall 2015 imagery, moving between a composed studio character and a more casual city figure. His spring 2017 Canali Made to Measure campaign gave his image another setting, with the emphasis on the fit and bearing of a tailored suit. The intensity remained, even as the clothes asked for a quieter performance.
