It’s a well-known fact: custom clothes are always better. But for those of us looking for a thanks-I-designed-it-myself outfit with a manageable price tag… Well, let’s say options are limited. Enter INDOCHINO, a menswear brand that’s at the forefront of made-to-measure clothiers, demonstrating that tailored, one-of-a-kind fashion is attainable without depleting your bank account. Whether you order a custom suit online via Indochino’s mobile app, or in-person at one of their 33 international showrooms, the experience is not only smooth but starts at a very reasonable $350. Interested? Of course, you are. Here’s what you need to know.
GETTING MEASURED IS SIMPLE
All you have to do is make an appointment at your nearest showroom (INDOCHINO is continually opening new locations in case there isn’t one near you yet). You’ll need to block out an hour, but once you’re there, it flies by. To get things started, a dedicated Fit Specialist flies around you with a tape measure, collecting unique measurements that will go toward creating your Fit Profile. Once they have your measurements, they’re saved in the system for good, making reordering new suits a breeze.
IT’S EASY TO FIND YOUR PERFECT FIT
Indochino’s expert sales staff is trained to work with you to find the perfect fit and drape. For instance, they’ll suggest your jacket length be adequate to cover your rear end, and that the hemline of your pants falls just below the top of the back of your shoe. But, if you like it a little different, just let your Style Guides know, and they’ll adjust accordingly.
FABRIC OPTIONS? ALMOST LIMITLESS
There are well over 100 fabrics to choose from at INDOCHINO. You can get a standard suit in traditional grey, navy, or black—or a showy plaid print that you’d want to wear Mad Men inspired garden party. The Merino wool comes only from top tier oversea suppliers and is carefully selected to provide maximum comfort, a perfect drape, and ultimate breathability. Wool can absorb up to 30 percent of its weight in moisture, meaning it’ll keep you bone dry on those muggy hot days. It also possesses greater elasticity and wrinkle-resistance, meaning you’ll look as fresh at 5 pm as you did at 9 am.
A CUSTOM LOOK THAT’S TRULY YOURS
Once you’ve been measured and chosen your fabric, you’ve got a ton of personalization options to make your mark. Do you want peak lapels or slim-notch? One button, two, three, or double-breasted? Pocket flaps or not? You’ll likely have an idea of what you want with button selection and lapel width, but with things as hazy as pocket flaps, you’ll luckily have the recommendations of Indochino’s staff at your disposal. (It’s entirely subjective, you’ll learn, but they’ll suggest including a flap since you can always tuck it in.)
IT’S WHAT’S ON THE INSIDE THAT COUNTS
There are dozens of linings available, from paisleys and polka dots to traditional solids. Again, it’s all about personal preference, but if you’re unsure which to choose, you’ll be given a few reasons why a specific lining may clash with the suit and how others will work better with the fabric. Make your selection and provide them with some monogram text—you’re afforded two lines above the inside breast pocket—and you’re good to go. Be sure to be creative with the monogram; they’ve seen it all.
NEWCOMERS ARE WELCOME
Even if it’s your first time going custom, the experience is carefully designed, so you never feel like you’re out of your element. The staff is there to help and guide you, and will never talk down to you for not knowing things like the difference between a wide peak lapel and a three button rollover. You leave enlightened, not embarrassed.
DELIVERED IN TWO WEEKS
The moment of truth: your suit arrives. The first thing you’ll notice is the remarkable craftsmanship before you throw it on and realize it fits better any off the rack suit you’ve ever worn. Plus, in the rare event that the suit doesn’t fit quite right, INDOCHINO has an allotted alteration amount you can use to nail the fit to perfection. There’s no feeling like going custom.
