Since as early as the 1800s, dapper gentlemen everywhere have realized that a simple suit doesn’t make a man. In fact, it’s the fine details that truly leave a lasting impression, such as lapels, cufflinks, socks, and various ties. And while you wouldn’t be wrong in saying that a great suit is important, the truth is that every article and accessory works towards the bigger picture, which is the impression that you will leave with every person you meet.

As Men’s Fashion agrees, “You don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression. And yes, that means from head to toe–all the way down to your socks.”

Colors to Complement your Outfit

While many fashion magazines and sites will direct you to a color wheel of primary, secondary, and tertiary matching colors, it can often be difficult to work from. And despite the simple rules of matching primary colors with secondary colors and complementing with tertiary colors, composing the perfect outfit can get complicated.

Fortunately, fashion advances rapidly, and reputable, quality brands like VK Nagrani design socks that ensure you can complement almost any outfit. However, it’s important that you don’t make your socks the highlight of your suit, as you really want attention to be focused on your face.

Dark Suits

A common mistake many people make when wearing a dark suit is matching their socks with their shoes. This is an easy mistake to make because it seems natural to wear black socks with black shoes, but if you are donning navy trousers and black shoes, ensure that your socks match your trousers rather.

Light Suits

For lighter, more vibrant styles, matching your socks becomes more complicated. Rather than matching your trousers, socks are ideal for tying in the contrasting colors of your trousers and shoes. So try and find a color that is slightly darker than your suit but lighter than your shoes.

Finally, when choosing sock colors, regardless of whether you are wearing a light or dark suit, you should be focusing on these two primary objectives:

  • Firstly, isolating your shoes as a separate accessory
  • Secondly, ensure that your socks don’t distract attention from your suit.

With these tips in mind, you are certainly on your way to dressing to your own style, and rather than just following fashion guides, you can start experimenting with what works best for your unique style and personality.

Be Cautious but Brave with Textures and Patterns

Textured and patterned socks are always a gamble for inexperienced gentlemen, as they can either appear to be stylish and creative or disastrously tacky. But this is because many people simply see socks in the store and purchase them without considering the style. And while this may definitely work at home during Christmas holidays, in corporate or social gatherings, these can lead to embarrassment.

Matching Textures

One of the main reasons why fluffy socks often look comfortable but seldom look stylish is that people don’t understand that textures and colors need to match. If you want to wear rugged or heavy socks, match them with similarly heavy or rugged materials like denim, tween corduroy, or even leather. This way, your socks won’t look like fluffy, out-of-place leg warmers but rather like the perfect fit between snug jeans and dapper leather shoes.

Matching Patterns

This is wear sock-style gets complicated, as patterns are comprised of one or more other colors on top of a primary base color. However, you don’t have to dive in head first with polka dots or swirls and can start with simple stripes and dots. Stripes and dots socks are often designed to go with most outfits, with simple designs that aim to add just a touch of vibrancy.

From here, you can start getting a feel for how various patterns and splashes of color interact with various outfits. And while there is no set guide for wearing or matching patterned socks, with a little bit of practice, a brave attitude, and possibly a few mistakes along the way, you too can be wearing those mustache or mottle-patterned socks that you’ve always seen but never dared to wear.

In our modern age of modern fashion, socks have become more than just feet-warming functional footwear and are now one of the most affordable ways to accessorize and stylize your outfits. However, it is important to remember that socks should also always complement the occasion. Wearing bright and vibrant socks to a social gathering can make you the life of the party, whereas wearing the same socks to work may cause your boss to question your professionalism.
