The Met Gala is the social event of the year, where A-listers and the Hollywood elite hit the red carpet to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Held in New York, this year’s theme was ‘In America: An Anthology of Fashion.’ After two years of upheaval, 2022’s Gala was always guaranteed to be an even more significant celebratory event.
Here are several of our favorite attendees from the 2022 Met Gala:
Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds
Co-chairs of the event, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds executed the night’s theme perfectly. Reynolds wore a classically elegant chocolate brown velvet suit, and Lively wore an Atelier Versace gown that transformed from a pink sash into a baby blue train. Their outfits were classy and stylish without being too over the top – the perfect representation of the theme. Once again, Lively’s dress matched the color of the carpet, a tradition she sticks to every year.
Kodi Smit-McPhee
Star of The Power of the Dog, Kodi Smit-McPhee wore a modern ensemble created by one of the leading Italian fashion designers brands, Bottega Veneta, crafted using the American flag’s colors. He wore a white pinstripe shirt, blue jeans, and bold red opera gloves, stating that the Met Gala is an event where people can go with “zero boundaries and judgments on how they want to express themselves through fashion.” His outfit was attention-grabbing and on theme with the night.
Simone Ashley
Bridgerton star and actress of the moment Simone Ashley put a spin on the classic red carpet dress by wearing a crop top to the event – a style that’s been all the rage in 2022 but one we rarely associate with elegance and high-end fashion. However, Ashley pulled it off, wearing a bronze bustier and a sleek satin skirt, De Beers jewelry, and wet waves for that classic Hollywood glamour.
Jared Leto & Alessandro Michele
Jared Leto is known for his quirky red carpet outfits, having attended in 2019 with a wax replica of his own head, and 2022 was no different. He attended with close friend Alessandro Michele, Gucci’s creative director, and the two dressed identically in cream tuxedos with floral embroidery and red satin bow ties. This year wasn’t the first time the two have matched. They attended the 2018 Met Gala in coordinating suits too.
Janelle Monae
Janelle Monae’s outfits are always on-trend, and many predicted that the star would perfectly capture the Gilded Glamour theme of the night. Her Ralph Lauren outfit may have looked relatively ordinary, but up close, it was glinting in the light with a vast array of crystal embellishments. Coupled with a beautiful headpiece and ruby red lips, it was an elegant ensemble.
Stormzy
Representing the UK at his first Met Gala event, UK rapper Stormzy wore an all-white three-piece wool suit by Burberry with satin lapels and a white cape designed by Riccardo Tisci. He told reporters that he was nervous about hitting the Met’s red carpet for the first time and that the all-white look was a departure from the usual darker shades he tends to wear.
Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian embodied the Gilded Age with an actual piece of history, wearing Marilyn Monroe’s original dress, which she famously wore during her rendition of ‘Happy Birthday, Mr. President.’ While she only wore the dress for a few minutes, as it’s an archived piece of fashion history, her outfit more than summed up the night’s theme and was a worthwhile choice.
Maude Apatow
Dressed in a stunning Miu Miu dress, Euphoria star Maude Apatow arrived in a radiant red carpet look that encompassed an off-the-shoulder bustier gown with beading, complete with ’20s style curls and a deep berry lip for that nod to classic old glamour. Her outfit choice was very evocative of the Hollywood films of times gone by and was a perfect fit for the theme of the Gilded Age.
The Met Gala is renowned for its great forays into the world of fashion, and this year did not disappoint as celebrities put their spin on the theme of the event.
