Last summer’s shows marked Marcel Castenmiller’s first season in Europe yet the Canadian model proved to be an impressive force, racking up enough bookings for a seasoned veteran. One of those bookings happened to be Ann Demeulemeester. A truly talented designer, often characterized as a romantic, it is no surprise that Marcel was made to feel as part of the Demeulemeester family–booking two seasons in a row and sure to be back for another.
How did you enjoy the shows in Europe this past season?
Marcel: I had a great time. January 2010 is my second season since the summer of 2009. Very nice to return to work in Italy and France especially when you’ve already gone once before and you know what to expect. Plus I’ve become good friends with Jonas Kesseler, Matthew Hitt and Charlie Westerberg. It’s always helps to run into someone on the street rather than being alone all season.
Any favorites from a fashion standpoint?
Marcel: Never thought I could pull off a cape. They had those in Demeulemeester and Paul Smith. I like them, but would never wear them.
What is it like walking for Ann Demeulemeester? Is she significantly different than other designers?
Marcel: Big difference. Mrs. Demeulemeester is the most personable woman I’ve met in the industry. She really makes you feel like part of a family. You’re treated like part of her art instead of a pretty face to wear clothes.
