In a conversation with actor and friend Greta Lee, Melton reflects on his recent projects, including the forthcoming film “Warfare” and the second season of “Beef.”
Melton’s experience filming “Warfare” in London was a highlight of his career, particularly because he had the opportunity to work with directors Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza.
“Going to London to film for three months was probably the best thing for me,” Melton says. “The whole experience with Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, it was very grounding. Probably one of the best experiences for me as an actor to be a part of something like that.”
Melton’s unconventional upbringing has also significantly shaped him as a person and actor. Born to a Korean mother and an American father, he has navigated multiple cultural identities. This ability to code-switch has been a valuable asset in his career.
“Code switching, I don’t think it’s a bad thing,” he notes. “That’s why I love doing what we get to do. Whenever it comes to a role, I see it as an opportunity to experience a revelation of a version of myself.”
A recent trip to Korea, where he celebrated his grandmother’s 90th birthday, was a poignant reminder of the complexities of his cultural identity. The experience left him feeling emotional and reflective.
“When I was in Korea a few months ago, I felt something in me come to the surface and it made me very emotional,” he recalls. “I felt this connection with her and my whole Korean family. And I wished I could’ve expressed it [beyond] just hugging them, it was interesting.”
As Melton continues to navigate the complexities of his identity and career, he remains committed to exploring new roles and experiences. With a growing body of work and a unique perspective, he is poised to make a lasting impact in the entertainment industry.
