Newman talks to Attitude about his decision to come out by posting a video online. He explains that he didn’t hesitate. “Yeah, because I was like, ‘I don’t want to change my mind.’ I knew it was important, and I knew there was so many people who would say: ‘You shouldn’t do that'”, says Newman.

The American star continues, “The biggest thing for me was everybody was like, ‘Wait until after you’re successful,’ like [other] actors come out after their TV show’s done. There are so many who wait until their fame dies down and they’re not successful any more and then they want to capitalize on the gay audience. They’re like, ‘I don’t have any fans, maybe if I admit I’m gay then I’ll make some more money.’
Speaking bluntly, Newman confesses, “I just think that’s pathetic. I don’t want to judge anybody, but I was like, ‘My career is starting to take off right now and I’m so proud of my community and who we are and I’m so proud to be living in this day and age when so many people have fought and died for our rights and to change the world.'”
Newman concludes, “Even if I can just do a little tiny thing of just speaking my truth publicly, and encouraging everybody to do that, that’s how you solidify prosperity for a whole culture, each person taking that little step.”
