Discussing his Mr. Robot character of Elliot Alderson and his signature black hoodie, Malek explains, “It’s not that he’s unkempt. There’s just a level of callousness to the way he treats things like getting dressed. He likely prefers a uniform because it’s one less thing to think about.” He continues, “They initially came to me with sketches from the designer that included this very loud and colorful backpack. And I’m like, ‘I can’t wear this. This guy wouldn’t wear this.’ I kinda had this mild panic attack inside, like ‘This is not the way I see things.
