Murray Bartlett is drawing considerable attention with his standout performances in The White Lotus, The Last of Us, and Welcome to Chippendales. To share more insight into these roles and others, the Australian actor recently took part in a photoshoot for Mr Porter’s The Journal. Bartlett on Unlocking Each New Character
Murray Bartlett explains the trick to switching between characters seamlessly, providing insight into unlocking a character with every part. “There’s something that I’m learning about myself, or there’s some sort of revelation in this character that might even be really uncomfortable, a looking-in-the mirror moment,” says Bartlett. “The key to unlocking a character, I think, is that it’s a sort of exorcism or has some therapeutic element to it.”
Murray Bartlett Dishes on His Role in The Last of Us
Bartlett feels that The Last of Us has enabled him to expand his range as an actor. “I might have been the more subdued, handsome guy before,” he explains; however, this series gave him a lot of new opportunities. He excitedly remarks: “Now a lot of people are like, ‘That’s the crazy guy.’ I have choices. It’s huge. Choices like I’ve never had before. Even if I made bad choices, just the fact that I have choices is so exciting.”
Kumail Nanjiani on Bartlett in The White Lotus
According to Kumail Nanjiani, Bartlett’s costar on Hulu’s Welcome to Chippendales, Murray’s character from The White Lotus was significant because “He presents at first glance as sort of a more traditional masculinity, but he’s really not.” Nanjiani explains, “There’s like a real softness at his core. I think someone who looks like Murray, who’s just so handsome, watching someone like that spiral, it’s compelling in a different kind of way…You expect someone like that to be so put together.”
