Anna Zanes interviews Pharrell about his different projects, whether in music or fashion. “It just feels instinctual, it’s what makes sense for me,” explains Pharrell. “There’s never really been a plan, and every time I thought I had a plan, the universe…well, it’s never really worked out for me.”
However, Pharrell mentions people who pursue a comprehensive plan that frequently envelops their artistic expression. “I love and admire people who do it so well because they follow it to the letter,” says Pharrell. “It’s so good. Like Stanley Kubrick, perfect. Wes Anderson, perfect. Harmony Korine. You know, details, these guys — they stick to them. For me, it’s instincts and interest, but never a cohesive strategy.”
Pharrell, the artist, enjoys dancing with uncertainty. “Because what’s on the other side of it? You just don’t know what’s on the other side of the song, or the other side of that T-shirt, or the other side of those kicks, the other side of a kiss,” shares Pharell. “You just don’t know what’s on the other side—that uncertainty. Every day we do that. Every day you wake up.”
