Troye Sivan & Charli XCX for i-D
Troye Sivan and Charli XCX connect with i-D to dive into their “Charli XCX & Troye Sivan Present: Sweat” tour. Recalling how they first met, the two reveal it was at a house party hosted by Charli.
It wasn’t long before they collaborated on the hit track “1999,” which was produced by Swedish talent Oscar Holter.
Troye, the current face of Gap, reflects on making “1999,” “Once we were off to the races, it was just a good vibe. It’s weird to say this in front of you, Charli, but I think we think about music in similar ways. I’ve always thought it was cool how you curate community in pop.”
Troye notes that their shared network of songwriters and mutual friends made working together seamless. “It felt like a natural extension of the friendship.”
Charli jumps in to discuss the current state of pop. “It’s a really interesting time in pop music where niche is being rewarded in ways we haven’t seen for a while,” she says.
“There’s this new wave of artists—myself, Troye, Chappell Roan—who are thriving in mainstream culture, even though our music touches on queer themes or is deeply inspired by it, which is super cool.”
Charli also touches on Troye’s groundbreaking moment during his “Bloom” era: “When you shot that video with Bardia Zeinali, I remember thinking, ‘Oh my God, this pop star is owning his gayness in such an outward and confident way,’ which was pretty rare at the time.”
Troye Sivan and Charli XCX’s synergy comes across effortlessly in their conversation, blending the past with the current pop zeitgeist. Their friendship, rooted in mutual respect and a shared vision for pop’s evolving culture, is reflected in their words and work.
With this cover story, i-D ushers in a fresh era headlined by artists reshaping the cultural conversation.
