“What I often see is that people are frightened of fashion, and because it scares them or makes them feel insecure…they try to put it down.”
– Anna Wintour on being ridiculed so often.
Thursday night saw the screening of one of Sundance Film Festival’s most discussed documentaries, The September Issue, as part of the Sydney Film Festival.
While there are scheduled release dates, there were none listed for Australia, so I was naturally chuffed to be able to grab a ticket and head along to see it in advance.
The movie itself focuses on Anna Wintour, as chief editor of US Vogue, as well as stylist extraordinaire Grace Coddington, whose undeniably stunning spreads have the ability to instantly transport readers to parallel universes where everyone parades about on lavish movie sets and is comfortable in couture.
Glimpses are given into both ladies’ lives and the relationship they have with each other: Grace putting every fiber of her being into every shoot she works on and Anna, with what she calls her best asset, “decisiveness”, quick to dismiss anything that does not fit within the constraints of her vision.
There’s an overall lightheartedness to the documentary (we even catch Anna chuckling at her own criticisms), without losing sight of the fact that these women are exceptionally influential and have in their own right, become leaders of an industry.
I will see it this Friday at the SILVERDOCS Film Festival here in DC. Just got a press pass.
i saw it on thursday night also at the SFF
I realy enjoyed it, I think both Anna and grace came across as intelligent women who are great at what they do. Grace especially caught my interest and it would be incredible to sit and have a conversation with her. Loved the quote you have included and how she saw i as exclusion from ‘the cool group’ ha.
